SistaCYPHER: We conduct political education that is rooted in our experiences with injustice and oppression. We start within and work our way out to learn about other social justice struggles and develop a critical analysis of the world around us.

•  SistaORGANIZE! : We explore the meaning of power and the different ways it manifests itself in our lives and in our community. The young women learn how to organize through skill development workshops and hands-on experiences developing an organizing campaign. We create change in our communities and hold institutions accountable to the needs of the people.

     Organizing Circle Meeting (2004)

One of our objectives is to organize around issues of education for young mothers. We are very concerned with the alarming dropout rates among young mothers (there are 20,000 young mothers under the age of 21, not served by the NY state departrment of education).

What happens when our young mothers don’t have a high school diploma? Well, some will stay in violent relationships with their partners, some will end up working dead-end jobs without health insurance, others may stay trapped within the welfare system, the list goes on.

Why do so many young women drop out of school? Based on our conversations with 80 young mothers, the reasons are as diverse as the consequences.  There is a lack of child-care, they have to take on full-time jobs to support themselves, the families are not supportive, they do not feel valuable or school is not relevant to their daily struggles.

•  SistaSUSTAIN: Promote understanding of economic justice issues to encourage sisters to be active participants in their education, identify ways to make higher education accessible, explore different career options and awaken their creativity to develop and pursue work that is meaningful and sustaining.

SistaSOUL: We recognize the sacredness of social justice work. We are dedicated to healing our communities from all the pain, anger and hate that oppression fosters. Raising consciousness and organizing is a form of healing but we also consider it important to carry forth-traditional ways of keeping our children and ourselves healthy: mind, body and soul .
